Measure closing and opening torques according to ASTM D3198

Screw caps: Easy for everyone to open and still tight?

A torque is the force that acts on a pivot point with the help of a lever arm. For example, the moment at which the hand opens the screw cap of the water bottle. With our calibrated measuring equipment for torques, we can determine exactly the torque with which you should ideally close the screw caps of your bottles or canisters.
Because that’s the point: another person has to open the bottle without any problems: an old man, a young girl, someone who needs a quick sip of water after sports. The mechanic in the workshop who wants to open the engine oil. For all these people, the torque must be ideal.

Determining the ideal torque for screw caps

On its way to the end customer, the container, the bottle, the canister, must remain tight in any case and be as easy to open as possible at its destination (easy-opening).

Whether minimum closure or opening torque, we are equipped and qualified to determine this value. We generally perform the measurements in accordance with ASTM D3198 (Application and Removal Torque of Threaded or Lug-Style Closures).

The measurements can be performed regardless of the shape of your screw closures, so special solutions such as for twist-off closures are also possible.

Sensible application areas for torque measurements:

  • Food
  • Pharmaceutical products
  • Dangerous goods
  • Engine oils
  • Plant protection

In addition, we can also check the tightness for you under special transport loads, such as negative pressure in an aircraft.

Testing Standards & Equipment

  • ASTM D3198
The BFSV test laboratories offer special screw cap torque measuring devices. These sensor devices can be used to check the force torques of different screw cap diameters.
  • Torque sensor type BURSTER 8632:
    • Measuring range: 1 – 12 Nm
    • Linearity deviation: +/- 0.1% of the measuring range
    • Cap diameter: 10 – 80 mm
  • Torque sensor type TORNADO:
    • Measuring range: 1 – 10 Nm
    • Linearity deviation: +/- 0.5% of the measuring range
    • Closure diameter: 10 – 190 mm
